'Humiliation ritual' or jaw-dropping TV? Sydney Sweeney's 'Cassie-Zilla' scene splits fans wide open

Euphoria Season 3, Episode 5 turned Cassie Howard into a Godzilla-sized giant stomping through downtown LA, and the internet can't decide if it's genius or exploitation.

Sydney Sweeney appeared as a Godzilla-sized Cassie Howard in a downtown Los Angeles sequence, prompting divided reactions on X.

Euphoria Season 3, Episode 5, "This Little Piggy," aired Sunday on HBO Max and included one of the show's most elaborate sequences to date. Cassie's OnlyFans-style career grows, her subscriber count rises, and the episode turns that into a monster-movie fantasy in which she towers over the city, crushing buildings while helicopters swarm around her.

The scene riffs on Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and Godzilla, with Rue narrating over the destruction: "She knew this was her destiny, to triumph, to conquer, to win."

Within hours, X had a name for it: Cassie-Zilla.

The reaction

Fans split into two camps. One group couldn't get past the spectacle. "This production is crazy, can't lie," one user wrote. Another called the sequence "Epic stuff! Loved the scene and practical effects!"

Other viewers focused on how far the show keeps pushing Cassie. "I'm convinced this season of Euphoria is a Sydney Sweeney humiliation ritual," one viewer posted, a phrase that other fans echoed on X.

Sweeney described the sequence differently. In behind-the-scenes comments shared by @season3euphoria on X, she said, "The Cassie-Zilla sequence was probably the coolest thing I've ever done."

She also described the practical production in detail: "There were trees and cars and the buildings were my size." The miniature sets representing downtown Los Angeles took a year to build.

Creator Sam Levinson has publicly backed her performance this season, saying Sweeney is able to "anchor the scene with this kind of madness and chaos going on around her" and that when pushed, "she becomes brilliant."

The debate over how Euphoria uses Sydney isn't new. She previously addressed criticism of her nude scenes in an interview with The Independent: "I'm very proud of my work in Euphoria. I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked."

That tension has resurfaced on X. Viewers are discussing Sweeney's performance, with some focusing on the spectacle and others asking whether the show is giving her a showcase or putting her through something.

With Euphoria Season 3 still airing on HBO Max, viewers will be watching to see if any remaining episode tops Cassie-Zilla.
